Hello Fremont Community!
Welcome to the Fremont PTA Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee site! We know school is off to a very different start and that every family is dealing with their own unique challenges. Our PTA is also adapting but thankfully, we are working hard to do what we do best: build together.
The DEI chair position was created in March, just before Covid hit. Nonetheless, we were still able to put on the appropriate event to kick off the spring: Norooz (Persian New Year). Our Chair, Nooshin gave us a short lesson on the history and festivities, set up a Hafsteen and brought in a delicious feast. To learn more about Norooz, please visit:
Mission: The mission of Fremont Elementary School's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee is to promote an enriching and supporting climate with a racial, gender and social equity lens that allows all members of the Fremont community to thrive and succeed.
Meet our Chair, Dr. Nooshin Valizadeh!
Nooshin is an Iranian-American race, gender and social equity educator, community organizer and spoken word Artivist. She has been a curriculum developer and instructional faculty member at UCLA and USC since 2015 and is one of the founding members of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee for the Long Beach PTA Council, where they have led PTAs all over the country to start their own DEI committees. She is eager to work with her fellow Fremont families towards creating an inclusive community that is led by empathy and love for our children. Nooshin resides in Belmont Heights with her husband, Scott, her 1st grade daughter, Sarina and their rescue dog, Raven.
Shortly after school closures, recordings of the brutal killing of George Floyd circulated and jump started a series of protests all over the world. We responded with the following statement and sent it to our Fremont community. You may read that statement HERE. We are well aware that these statements along with social media posts and hashtags can be performative and minimize the efforts of activists on the front lines. What will set us apart as a committee and school will be committing to actions that we have the power to take at Fremont. The first step will be organizing and building this committee.
