A Message from Fremont PTA: Celebrating Halloween Together
At Fremont, we cherish the traditions that bring our school community together and create lasting memories for our children. As our community grows and evolves, we also recognize the importance of adapting our traditions to ensure every student feels included and welcome.
Equity and inclusion have been at the heart of this transition. Our goal is to recognize and celebrate the diverse cultures, holidays, and traditions of our Fremont families as equally and inclusively as possible. By bringing these celebrations into our Community Nights, we hope to create a consistent and welcoming approach where all traditions are valued and families can choose how they wish to participate. We recognize that not all families celebrate Halloween, have access to costumes, or feel comfortable participating, and we want every student to feel equally included during the school day.
This year, the PTA worked closely with school leadership to transition from the traditional Costume Parade to a Community Night Trunk-or-Treat, creating an opportunity for families to celebrate costumes, creativity, and Halloween traditions together outside of school hours. This approach reflects our broader commitment to celebrating our community's diverse traditions through Community Nights, giving each celebration the same opportunity to bring families together.
We also want to clarify that the PTA's vote was not to discontinue costumes during the school day, but to introduce Trunk-or-Treat in place of the traditional parade. Decisions about school-day activities and dress-up are made by school administration.
The traditional Costume Parade, while a cherished event, presented several logistical challenges over the years. Coordinating with teachers, staff, ELOP, and other after-school programs required significant planning and volunteer support. Managing student transitions, supervision, and safety during the event became increasingly complex. Moving to a Community Night Trunk-or-Treat allows us to offer a more manageable, safe, and enjoyable celebration for students and families.
With Halloween falling on a Saturday this year, we have a wonderful opportunity to come together and celebrate outside of school hours.
We understand that these traditions hold special memories for many families, and we truly appreciate the thoughtful feedback we've received. Our goal is not to take away the joy of Halloween, but to create a more inclusive and consistent way to honor all traditions and bring our community together.
Thank you for your continued support and for helping us create meaningful experiences for all Fremont students and families.
